What upgrades did you add? The home is an Insulated Concrete shell built with Insulating Concrete Forms (ICFs). The roof is a trussed system with energy 'heels' that allow super R-value blown insulation at full depth all the way to the outside line of the exterior walls. The floor is a concrete slab-on-grade with a full membrane of rigid insulation underneath and hydronic in-floor radiant heat.
What was your reason for building? Prior to moving to Spokane, we had built our home in Anchorage, Alaska. In Anchorage, we worked very closely with our builder and were involved throughout the building process. Because of this prior experience, the decision to build our home in Spokane was an easy one. However, we needed help locating excellent subcontractors and with the details of building an ICF home.
Would you build your own home again and, if so, would you use UBuildIt? We would definitely build again and we would use UBuildIt. The in-depth knowledge offered by UBuildIt concerning all aspects of construction was invaluable. Every subcontractor suggested by UBuildIt was excellent. In every case, they delivered on-time and as bid.
What was the hardest part about building? The single most important aspect of building your own home is the extensive planning needed prior to commencing construction. UBuildIt spends a great deal of time and effort on this planning phase. Once construction begins, the smooth and timely flow of subcontractors for each phase of construction is paramount. Again, the process UBuildIt utilizes coupled with their in-depth knowledge of local subcontractors was excellent. In total, UBuildIt makes it possible for anyone who wishes to build their own home to do so. The finished product speaks volumes about the service offered by UBuildIt.
Any other comments? Having built before we knew what to expect. As the General Contractor/Project Manager, it was our job to define our needs and expectations and schedule and hire the subcontractors that could deliver. The support and guidance from UBuildIt in suggesting subcontractors and in scheduling was invaluable.
